How to unclog a drain (and when to call a tubero)

October 5, 2026 · 5 min read

The fastest way to unclog a drain is usually the cheapest one: a plunger, a little patience and a look at what is blocking the pipe. Barado ang lababo means the sink is clogged, and it is the phrase people type when the water stops draining. People also search for paano mag-declog ng lababo, which means how to declog a sink. Declog is the everyday word for clearing a blockage, and a tubero is a plumber.

This guide covers the order to try things in, the chemical cleaners to avoid mixing, and the point at which you should call a tubero. It also gives the published price references that exist for professional declogging, with notes on where those figures come from.

Check where the blockage is

Work out which drain is blocked before you start. If only one sink or shower drains slowly, the blockage is probably in that fixture's trap or branch line. If several fixtures back up at once, or water rises in the floor drain when the toilet flushes, the problem is further down the line, and a plunger will not reach it.

Remove the stopper or strainer and look at what is there. Hair, soap scum and food grease are the usual causes in a bathroom or kitchen sink. Pull out what you can by hand, wearing gloves, and put it in the bin rather than the drain.

Step 1: use a plunger

If the sink has an overflow hole, cover it with a wet cloth so the plunger can build pressure. Fill the basin enough to cover the plunger cup, then pump firmly ten to fifteen times without lifting the cup off the drain. Pull it off sharply to break the seal, then check the flow.

Try this for a few minutes before you move on. If the water drains, run hot water for a minute to clear the rest. If it does not, the blockage is probably too far down for a plunger to reach, and a drain snake is the next tool.

Step 2: use a drain snake

A hand drain snake, sometimes called a drain auger, is a flexible wire you feed into the pipe. Turn the handle slowly and pull the wire back to bring the blockage up with it. Stop if you meet a hard resistance that does not give, because forcing it can damage the pipe.

For a shower drain, a bent wire hook pulled from the strainer often removes most of the hair. This is the cheapest fix and it covers the common cases. Clean the tool after use and dry it, so you do not leave residue in the pipe.

Chemical drain cleaners: use them with care

Chemical cleaners are where serious accidents happen. Never mix one drain product with another, and never combine bleach with an acid-based cleaner. New Jersey's health department issued an alert after a plumber poured a sulfuric acid drain solvent into a clogged drain that already held bleach. The reaction released chlorine gas, and he needed emergency treatment. Hong Kong's Consumer Council gives the same advice: do not mix unblockers or cleaning agents, because the result can be toxic gas or worse.

Read the label before you plunge after using a chemical cleaner. Some labels say not to plunge once the product has been applied, because the chemical may still be in the pipe. Follow the label's waiting time, and do not reach for a plunger first if the label says otherwise.

Do not pour a chemical cleaner into a drain that does not flow at all. The liquid can sit above the clog as a strong caustic bath, and some products heat up as they react with the blockage. The Consumer Council also recommends trying a plunger first, and warns about chemical burns. Keep gloves and eye protection on, and keep the room ventilated.

When to call a tubero

Call a tubero when a plunger and a snake have not cleared the drain, when several fixtures back up together, or when water comes up through a floor drain. These signs usually mean the blockage is in the main line or a branch you cannot reach from the fixture.

Also call a plumber if you smell sewage in a room, see water rising in the toilet bowl, or notice damp patches on a wall near a pipe. Those signs can point to a leak or a blockage that needs a camera or a pressure tool to find. If you have a septic tank, avoid pouring strong chemicals to fix a slow sink. Strong chemicals can disturb the bacteria a septic system relies on, and a full or blocked tank is a separate job. The malabanan guide in this series covers that.

What a professional visit costs

A professional declog is priced per fixture or per line, and access and time of day change the quote. Handledph, a Davao home-repair company, lists ₱800 to ₱2,500 for a sink declog and ₱2,500 to ₱6,000 for a main-line declog in its August 2026 price list. Those are Davao prices, not Metro Manila prices, so treat them as a reference only.

Metro Manila rates are harder to find in published form. KuyaYos, a Quezon City platform, says labour is agreed on site and materials are charged at cost, and it lists a ₱500 service guarantee. Ask any tubero to quote the call-out, the declog and the parts separately, and confirm whether the call-out fee is waived if you go ahead with a repair.

On Taskly, you can compare verified taskers' rates before you book, and payment is held until the job is done. Compare the scope as well as the number, because a low price for a quick snake job and a higher price for a main-line clear are different jobs.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best first step for a clogged sink? Remove what you can by hand, then use a plunger for a few minutes. Many sink clogs clear at this step.

Can I use a chemical cleaner and a plunger together? Only after you have read the label. Some labels say not to plunge after the product has been used, and you should never mix one product with another.

When is a clog an emergency? When sewage comes back up, when several fixtures back up at once, or when there is a sewage smell in a room. Call a tubero and keep water away from the affected area until someone has looked at it.

How much does a tubero charge for a declog? In Davao, Handledph lists a sink declog at ₱800 to ₱2,500 and a main line at ₱2,500 to ₱6,000. Metro Manila prices vary, so ask for a quote that separates the call-out, the work and the parts.
